A very large and expansive group of sculpture from internationally acclaimed sculptor Frederick Hart (b.1943 – d.1999) will be on display at Brilliance In Color Gallery, 25 King Street in the Plaza area of downtown St. Augustine this Weekend, November 11^th and 12^th (Fri/Sat). This show is of National significance and importance, and over 80 distinct bronze and acrylic creations from Hart are on exhibit and available for acquisition. The exhibition is open to the public throughout the month of November.

Hart’s sculpture can be seen in public displays in Brookgreen Gardens, Newington-Cropsey Foundation Gallery, as well as the courtyard of the Lightner Museum here in the Ancient City. Harts’ widow Lindy will be in attendance throughout the weekend, along with Robert Chase, publisher and life-long friend of the artist. “This will be our major effort of 2011 to provide Florida residents with an opportunity of seeing, in great preponderance, the art of a major iconic American figure”, said Len Cutter (president, Cutter & Cutter Fine Art). Advanced viewers have already been deeply moved and overwhelmed by such pieces as “Daughters of Odessa”, trilogy bronze, which will be seen for the first time ever at Brilliance In Color. (The Prince of Wales has had for years at his Highgrove residence in the UK the same grouping.) The cultural aspects and impact of this exhibition are palpable and First Coast residents will be enthralled with what they see. Mr. Cutter also stated that, “St. Augustine has returned to its former place of glory among art locales in America with this exhibition, and the continuing growth of the downtown art district.”

"If you think about what Hart achieved in his best work, it’s not merely the artistic excellence that one admires; it is the singularity and courage of what he did." These words are spoken by Dana Gioia, past chairman of the National Endowment of the Arts, in a 2009 interview. The words are strikingly similar to the response Rick gave sixteen years earlier when asked in another interview to characterize the legacy he hoped to achieve. In his somewhat self-conscious but candid response, Rick reveals that he would like to be remembered best as "a singular and major force" in reconnecting art to society.

Rick had long questioned the value and purpose of art and the role of the artist in a culture in which art no longer expressed the ancient values of truth, beauty, and goodness. Rick believed that "...art has a moral responsibility, that it must pursue something higher than itself. Art must be a part of life. It must exist in the domain of the common man. It must be an enriching, ennobling, and vital partner in the public pursuit of civilization. It should be a majestic presence in everyday life just as it was in the past." Rick’s philosophy put him in opposition to much of contemporary art and propelled him on a divergent trajectory into history.

It was a lonely and uncharted path, but the values Rick championed served as a compass enabling him to step forward with other artists at one of history’s critical junctures. Voices from the arts community put Rick in the forefront of a re-orientation of art in today’s culture. These artists, writers, art critics, gallery owners, and musicians speak of a burgeoning movement in art that celebrates craftsmanship and purpose and seeks to connect with a public in need of affirmation only art can offer.

Tom Wolfe commented in a New York Times Magazine article (January, 2000) where he said that Rick "…will not have been the first major artist to have died ten minutes before history absolved him and proved him right." As the twentieth century gave way to the next millennium, Rick’s life was cut short, but his journey continues. His expanding legacy is a bridge to the future he passionately anticipated.

New Royo Limited Edition

Spanish Master Royo recently decided to create his first limited edition in nearly a decade. The new decade continues to see a strong attraction in the art collecting world for Royo’s elegant originals. In the past, large numbers of fans acquired his L/E releases. Beginning around 2006, Royo withdrew from the L/E market opting for an “originals only” market which, in retrospect, seems to have been a timely decision considering recent economic conditions. Royo’s popularity has continued to grow and as one of his dealers we welcome “Morena” a 32” x 39.5” beautiful mixed media on panel (edition of 125). Royo has recently hand signed the entire edition and it looks spectacular!

“I believe that my art has a spiritual beauty, a sense of ascension, grace, flight, awakening, and rebirth that is rare; and what is especially important to me is that I use beauty and flight as a metaphor for divinity.” —Ira Reines

Ira Reines was born in New York, New York on December 3, 1957 and by the age of five his sculptural talents began to emerge. Reines studied the works of Michelangelo, Bernini, and Rodin most passionately and even had the good fortune to experience their masterpieces first-hand in Rome and Florence. As he grew older, he also came to admire the work of twentieth-century master sculptor Frederick Hart. His career got a tremendous boost when he was hired to work with Art Deco Master Erte. Ira worked closely with Erte, translating the master’s two-dimensional designs into seventy bronze sculptures that were sold world-wide. After experiencing several life-changing events, Reines rededicated himself and began to strip away the unnecessary elements in his work, finding his true voice.

Dmitri Danish was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, in 1966. A natural artist from the start, taking his first drawing pencil in hand before he was able to walk or talk. Over the years his career quickly took off and he has exhibited in Ukraine, Russia and other Eastern European countries. In 2000 the Kharkiv State Museum conducted a solo exhibition called "Cities and Mountains" and purchased three of his paintings that are now part of their permanent collection. During that same time, the New Jersey Museum of Modern Art also purchased three of Danish's works. And, in 2003 the Ukrainian government purchased a painting and presented it to the outgoing ambassador of the United States. Danish has traveled most of Europe since the opening of the Russian borders visiting cities and countries he dreamed about as a child. He has spent time Italy, France, Holland, Hungary, Austria, Greece, and Turkey, and made his first trip to the U.S. in 2005 to participate in several one-man shows.

Artist Jeffrey Terreson was born in Bronxville, NY, at an early age, Terreson had the pleasure of knowing what he was going to do. Upon graduation from college he moved to New York City to begin a career as an artist. For years, Terreson painted and supported himself through his fine art illustrations. His artwork was published for many Fortune 500 companies and appeared in nationally recognized periodicals such as Time, Newsweek, TV Guide, Readers Digest and many more. After a great deal of success in the New York art scene, in 1996 Terreson decided it was time to take his art in a new direction. His new fine art status now finds him in our countries top galleries.

In 1964, a star was born in the scenic port town of Vlore, Albania. Modern master Josef Kote emerged eager to share his unique vision with the world. Kote began a journey towards artistic self-discovery in his youth and never looked back. In 1990, he relocated to Greece and began working as a freelance visual artist. In this new environment, Kote's style evolved and flourished. During the decade he resided in Greece, Kote was acknowledged by numerous prestigious artists, as well as public and private collectors. His elevated status in the art world led to many great commissions. In 2000, for example, Kote was commissioned by the Greek community of Toronto to paint the likeness of the visiting President of Greece, Konstantinos Stephanopoulos. The artist saw his dream develop before his very eyes; the fruits of decades of labor fully realized. In 2009, he began his most recent journey, and for the third time, completely uprooted himself and moved to New York City. Who knows what beauty the future holds for one of modern art's greatest voices.

19th Century Art Event Concludes

Brilliance In Color Fine Art Gallery (A Cutter & Cutter Gallery) located on the plaza in downtown St. Augustine announced today the conclusion of a very successful exhibition of authentic period art. The show ran from mid-April thru mid-May and attracted clients and fans of fine art from over 20 states. Matthew and Mark Cutter (partners) jointly announced that over 60 works of art from the 19th Century Masters were acquired and now reside in private collections. “We wanted to make the gallery look and feel like a fine museum and our clients really enjoyed the private dinner parties as well as the ballet performance choreographed and performed by the Florida ballet.” The Cutters went on to express their thanks to Laurie Byrd of the Florida Ballet for her continued creativity and understanding of the symbiotic connection between art and dance. The performance provided a unique verve and vitality which permeated the room and filled clients with an elevated understanding of the continuing importance of artists such as Toulouse –Lautrec, Renoir, Degas and Mary Cassatt.

The Cutter Family conducts 18 art exhibitions a year within their four downtown St. Augustine locations and credits that effort as the reason for their continued growth, popularity, and notoriety as one of America’s most successful art dealers. Matthew and Mark Cutter concluded by saying, “Our Brilliance In Color gallery will continuously exhibit a selective portion of 19th Century Art, which we have learned will still be popular long after all of us are gone.”

American Impressionism Exhibition Opens May 27th & 28th

Cutter & Cutter Fine Art of Saint Augustine, FL is pleased to announce another exhibition to be held at one of its four downtown Saint Augustine art galleries. “American Impressionism” will be a two week exhibition of three of the nation’s best and most collected impressionists painters. Over 100 new original canvases will be featured along with a very large number of iconic limited editions. The work of Leonard Wren, Mary Dolph Wood, and Stephen Shortridge will be featured and represents the best in still life, landscape, and multi-topic romantic interiors, cityscapes, and seascapes. The public is invited to enjoy the art between May 27th thru July 12th. We are lucky, all of us as a group, and specifically us as your art dealer, you as a sophisticated client, and Michael and Inessa Garmash as the most exciting and potentially strongest of the artists we represent. This Saturday, January 29th from 1:00 – 4:00 PM, Worley Faver will be available at Brilliance In Color (25 King Street, on the plaza in downtown St. Augustine) to meet with you and explain his remarkable hand-coiled technique (no potter’s wheel is used). This is an ancient technique, used by Native American Potters (one of Worley’s biggest influences is Maria Martinez, one of the oldest, most revered American Indian potters) and actually goes back to early Egyptian times. Worley’s only modern tool is his kiln, all his pottery is created by hand, using tools nature provides (he uses a walnut shell and corals for textures and a smooth river stone for burnishing, the dark color is achieved by placing the red-hot pottery in a mound of wood shavings). With this time-honored technique Worley brings an artistic embellishment to each original pot that comes directly from his meditations on life itself and all of its mystical meaning.

About Brian Davis

The crisp, exuberant paintings of artist Brian Davis give as much meaningful insight into his dynamic, perfection driven personality as the floral renderings he creates. Meticulous in his process and passionate about his art, Davis never lets a piece out of his studio that is “sub-par.” The result has been a 30-year career filled with much-coveted art in Davis’ unique realist style.

“For an artist to be successful, a professional level of consistency is very important,” Davis explains. “I have spent many years working to achieve this goal. I feel very proud of the body of work that I have produced in my career.” From an early age, Davis was considered the artist in the family. After studying architecture for two years in college, he realized that fine art was where his heart truly was, so he shifted his focus.

Davis has enjoyed a successful career as an illustrator. However, he thought of illustration as more of a stepping-stone to his primary goal of a career in fine art. He entered the fine-art market in 1980 with an image of two calla lilies against a black background. The piece served as the poster image for a show of Davis’ work at the Long Beach Museum in Los Angeles. Through the years, Davis met some challenges, but he always managed to maintain an optimistic frame of mind. “Any profession that provides one with emotional satisfaction in addition to a livelihood is filled with strong competitors,” Davis says. “To be successful, an artist needs a tough, determined and have a positive mental attitude, in addition to talent.”

Blossom II~Art of Flowers is a juried inertnational art competition and exhibition. The very first Blossom exhibition took place in 2007 and was conceived to recognize, promote and reward excellence in floral art and to enhance the publics appreciation and awarness of this time-honored artistic tradition.

Approximately one-hundred works of art will be selected by an eminently-qualified panel of Jurors. The selected works will then be featured in the premiere exhibition at the Naples Museum of Art in Naples, Florida. Selections from the premiere exhibition will tour to The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum Art Institute, The R.W. Norton Art Gallery, and other possible venues.

About The Susan Kathleen Black Foundation - The Foundation, created for the advancement of art education, was initially established in 2001 as a memorial fund by James E. Parkman in honor of his wife, Susan Kathleen Black, who died unexpectedly just before Christmas 2000 after a lengthy illness.
Susan Kathleen was a devoted artist and student who took every opportunity to learn from master artists and skilled experts to develop her own talent. Her favorite workshops were at the Beartooth School of Wildlife Art in Big Timber, Montana, where she studied with many nationally known wildlife artists.
Since its creation, the memorial fund has awarded grants for art education to elementary schools in Texas and New Mexico; teen workshops in Montana and conferences for the development of professional artists in Divide, Colorado and Dubois, Wyoming. In addition, one full college art scholarship has been awarded.
In early 2003 the memorial fund was granted 501 (c )(3) status and became the Susan Kathleen Black Foundation, Inc. Its mission is to continue to fund art education for a broad range of art programs throughout the nation, while giving artists of all ages the opportunity to develop their skills and achieve their goals as artists.

Bill Mack and the Twins

Although Bill Mack typically does gallery work, Bill's relationship with the Pohlad family, (owners of the Minnesota Twins), inevitably lead him to once again add another group of sports figures to his already impressive resume of Sports Hall of Famers. Kirby Puckett, Harmon Killebrew, and Rod Carew are just a few of many Sports figures created By Bill Mack. Bill Mack has also created works from Peggy Fleming, Casey Tibbs, U.S. Hockey Hall of Famer Hobey Baker, Tennis legend Arthur Ashe, and many more.

A statue of Calvin Griffith, the first owner of the Minnesota Twins was unveiled on September 3rd outside the Target Field. The ceremony was joined by Twins fans as well as baseball legends, Harmon Killebrew, Rod Carew and the Griffith family. Bill is not finished as the Twins and the Pohlad family have also commissioned Bill to install a similar bronze statue of Carl and Eloise Pohlad later this Fall. A location for the unveiling has not yet been determined.

Bill Mack primarily works in relief sculpture, however, this project was especially unique. There were many reasons Bill decided to accept the commissions to create larger-than-life statues, however, a few simple reasons close to Bill Mack were enough to move forward. Following a tradition of 137 years, the Salmagundi Club continues to serve as a center for fine arts. Originally formed as the Salmagundi Sketch Club in 1871, the Club adopted its present name a hundred years ago after Washington Irving published his potpourri of wit and wisdom called "The Salmagundi Papers". Through the years the Club has been the singular gathering place for such great artists as Childe Hassam, William Merrit Chase, Howard Pyle, N.C. Just came back from the gallery (Brilliance In Color) and all I can say is WOW! This was my first sneak peak at the show in its entirety, amazing to say the least. This is by far one of the most complete efforts I have personally seen from Royo. I know that all our Royo collectors and fans will not be disappointed this weekend. The majority of these works are HUGE, and the Blancos theme is clearly evident. We also have several other Royo originals from previous collections and a few really unique works as well. This is sure to be a one-of-a-kind experience that no other gallery in the world could even try to duplicate.

On July 31, 2010, Brilliance In Color Gallery will open "Blancos" (Whites), an exhibition of paintings by contemporary Spanish figurative painter, Royo. This exhibition comprises 35 new oil paintings on canvas together with a selection of drawings, bronze sculptures and serigraphs. Royo has passionately and wholeheartedly dedicated the last 30 years of his career to the same subject matter: the female form. He is inspired by many historical periods from the Old Masters, such as Velazquez and Goya, to the 19th-century Impressionists, such as Sorolla. This new collection of paintings combines formal elements with a subtlety of the contemporary master’s eye. In this collection of Royo's paintings, subjects are depicted by a vast range of different whites, applied with a broken-color technique used to create a dramatic light across the painting. The “whites are composed of a thousand whites”, as Royo notes.

Arthur Fronckowiak (1949-2009)
Art Fronckowiak's distinctive style and technique is immediately recognized throughout the country. His landscapes, reminiscent of the renowned Hudson River School, have a soft, romantic quality that readily evokes mood and atmosphere. His floral, architectural works create a sense of peacefulness and invite the viewer to linger and enjoy. Each fresh look at a Fronckowiak painting reveals a new element, a new detail not seen before. Fronkowiak is perhaps best known for his oversize tropical and European landscapes. Voted Best Florida Artist in 1995 and named to Who’s Who in American Art in 1997, Fronckowiak’s distinctive style and technique is immediately recognized throughout the world.

With a history of commissioned work for corporate and private collectors, Fronckowiak brings a wide range of subject matter and painting styles to the contemporary canvas. His "first love" however, lies in the rich values of the traditional romantic landscape. All of his works reflect a special attention to the play of light and shadow from bright to extreme dark. His floral-architecturals create a sense of peacefulness and invite the viewer to linger and enjoy. Fronckowiak’s palette and technique are reminiscent of an "old world" blend of light, color and composition characteristic of the classical works of our past. He has spent many years at crafting the look, feel and presence of the early masters from the European "Barbizon" painters to the “Hudson River"' period in this country. His canvases reflect that quiet timelessness translated through the modern medium of acrylic oils developed to museum quality standards. Fronckowiak’s current effort is the emergence of an "Old Florida" style, calling to mind the influence of Old Masters such as Herzog, Inness and Bierstadt. "There is a romance in this place, its wilderness and its past, that transcends the modern look so characteristic of the contemporary Florida art scene."
Self-educated in his craft, Fronckowiak never set out to become an artist; from the earliest years of childhood drawings on wallpaper scraps, painting has been a part of his life. Born in 1949, Fronckowiak developed his skill by spending thousands of hours learning, he says, through, “trial and error”. His work has received wide recognition, numerous awards and has been exhibited extensively. Art Fronckowiak’s studio and home was in Venice, Florida.

Toulouse Lautrec, like no other nineteenth century artist was deeply influenced by Japanese woodblock prints. Just like the exuberant life of the amusement quarters of the Japanese Edo period, it was the nightlife of Montmartre in Paris, which inspired the works of this incredible artist. And like the great Ukiyo-e artist Utamaro, Toulouse Lautrec not only painted the world of brothels, but was a frequent guest himself. This cheerful poster was commissioned by the London firm J. & E. Bella, manufacturers of confetti, which was available in Paris only on the black market after being banned following the 1892 Mardi Gras. Before this time confetti had been composed of rather dangerous plaster chips. It was outlawed when a rage of
confetti was thrown from balconies injuries many passers by. In perhaps the gayest of all his images, a giddy, half-length girl is dizzily overwhelmed by the product she advertises. The shapes of the figure flatten and merge into decorative patterns, and the hands emerge on the paper rather than in space. The assertion of two-dimensional design at the expense of naturalism, a feature borrowed from Japanese woodblock prints, gave a visual punch to Lautrec’s posters rarely achieved by his contemporaries. Lithographed posters proliferated during the 1890s due to technical advances in color printing and the relaxation of laws restricting the placement of posters. Dance halls, café-concerts, and festive street life invigorated nighttime activities. Toulouse-Lautrec’s brilliant posters, made as advertisements, captured the vibrant appeal of the prosperous Belle Époque.
